Pilanesberg or Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park?
The two parks side by side on what you will see, what you can do, what it costs, how you get there and the health picture, with the facts behind every rating.
Our verdict
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and Pilanesberg are both restocked South African parks you can drive yourself in an ordinary car, but they suit different trips. Pick Pilanesberg for a short break from Gauteng with young children: it is 2.5 to 3 hours from Johannesburg, malaria-free, small enough to cover in a day and next to Sun City, though busy with day-trippers at weekends and with no night drive confirmed. Pick Hluhluwe-iMfolozi for a wilder park in Zululand: elephant and buffalo likely, lion a chance and wild dog a realistic hope, a night drive from Mpila, guided walks from age 12 and wilderness trails on foot in an area no vehicle may enter. It is a full day's drive from Johannesburg, so most people fly to Durban, and malaria risk there is low but not absent from September to May. Neither sells a boat trip.

2One guided bush walk of about four hours, early morning for ages 16 to 74, plus walks at some lodges on the private reserve; walking on your own is not allowed. | 5bestGuided walks leave Hilltop and Mpila for up to eight people aged 12 and over, and the iMfolozi wilderness trails spend two to four nights on foot in an area no vehicle may enter, including a Primitive Trail where you carry your pack and sleep out.
1Self-drivers must be out by gate closing, the main operator listed no night drive in September 2026, and no lodge's after-dark drive is confirmed. | 2bestOnly Mpila lists a night drive, Monday to Saturday at 18:00 and Sunday at 17:00; nobody may drive in the park after gate closing without an escort.
1The board publishes no boat trips and no fishing rules, and no operator sells either; Mankwe Dam is for the hide and the birds. | 1Ezemvelo's tariff lists no boat trip, and a Hluhluwe Dam cruise mentioned on its 2026 website is unconfirmed; the guide advises against wading or swimming because of bilharzia, crocodiles and hippos.
4Tar to the gate turn-offs and four tarred drives inside that a 2WD car manages, but the gravel loops call for high clearance and the tar is potholed in 2026. | 4All roads to the three gates are tarred and an ordinary car manages the tar spine and main gravel loops in dry weather, but the rest of the roughly 229 km is gravel, low-level crossings flooded in February 2025 and car hire near the park is difficult.

5bestNo malaria at all on the December 2025 national map, hospitals in Rustenburg about 50 km away, chalets for up to five at Bakgatla and Sun City on the southern boundary; walks and some lodges take only ages 16 and up. | 3Game drives take children from three, Hilltop's 4-bed chalets suit a family and children pay half the conservation fee, but walks start at 12, Mpila is unfenced, the CDC recommends tablets for the district and the guide names no nearby hospital.
4Elephant, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest on most days and lion and buffalo a fair chance in a park small enough to cover in a day, though leopard and cheetah are luck and no census has been published since 2010. | 4On a two or three day self-drive elephant, buffalo, giraffe, nyala and impala are likely and lion and wild dog a chance, 2.6 hours on tar from Durban's airport, though leopard and cheetah are luck in the thick bush.
1A fenced, restocked park of about 570 km² with Sun City on its edge, where Gauteng day-trippers queue at the gates at weekends. | 3bestThe iMfolozi Wilderness Area, about 25,000 ha, has no roads and no vehicles, but the rest of the park is a public road network with the R618 running through its corridor, and the camps fill in the school holidays. |

How the ratings work
- Big game is calculated from each park's sightings table on its wildlife page: guaranteed counts 3, likely 2, a fair chance 1, rare 0.5 and absent 0, across elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, wild dog, cheetah, hippo and giraffe, scaled so that 16 points is 5 out of 5.
- Birding follows the species count on the wildlife page. Low-budget safari follows the cheapest listed bed, the share of budget places and the daily park fee.
- Walking, night drives, water, self-drive, families, first safari and wilderness are our ratings, whole numbers from 1 to 5. Press "Why?" on any row to read the facts each one rests on, with the page they come from. Where a rule is not published we say so rather than guess.
- Prices are per person per night in US dollars as listed on the lodges pages, before park fees; the three-night totals come from each park's costs page and use the dated rates there. Fees are the international adult rate per day.
