Flying to Pilanesberg in 2026: Lanseria or OR Tambo, then the road

You cannot fly to Pilanesberg in 2026. The airport next to Sun City lost its terminal to fire on 29 August 2023 and has had no commercial traffic since, so every visitor lands in Gauteng and finishes the trip by road.

If you only want the answer

Fly into OR Tambo, the international hub 194 to 215 km from the gates, or Lanseria, the closest scheduled airport at 127 to 148 km. From either, hire a car or arrange a transfer; the drive takes about 2 hours from Lanseria and 2.5 to 3 hours from OR Tambo. Agent sites that still advertise flights from Cape Town to Pilanesberg are out of date.

Can you fly to Pilanesberg?

No scheduled airline serves Pilanesberg in 2026; we found no Airlink, CemAir or other route. The terminal, manager's office and boardroom at Pilanesberg International Airport were destroyed by fire on 29 August 2023, which halted all commercial operations. On 20 February 2026 the national Public Works minister and the North West premier signed an agreement under which Infrastructure South Africa prepares the airport's redevelopment, a 24 to 36 month preparation phase rather than construction.

The airport sits outside the park, next to it near Sun City, despite agent pages that place it inside. Its 2,750 m asphalt runway still exists, but we have no confirmation that private charters can land and clear passengers there in 2026, so do not book a charter that depends on it without written confirmation from the operator.

Which airport should you fly into for Pilanesberg?

Lanseria is the closest working airport and the one the board's chief executive named in March 2026, when he described tourists flying into Lanseria and taking a two-hour shuttle. OR Tambo is further but is where long-haul flights land, so most overseas visitors start there.

Road figures from the OSRM route planner, run 24 September 2026, without traffic. Lanseria's route list comes from Wikipedia, checked 24 September 2026, not from the airline; confirm timetables and fares with FlySafair or the airline you use.

Timetables, fares and baggage

Because no airline flies to Pilanesberg, there is no 2026 timetable or fare to print for the park itself. Domestic timetables and fares into Lanseria and OR Tambo change by the week, and the research behind this guide holds no dated fare or baggage rule for them, so check the airline's own site for your dates. If you are connecting from a long-haul flight at OR Tambo, the onward leg is by road, so the transfer you plan is a drive of about 3 hours, not a second flight.

From the airport to the park

Car hire is standard at both Lanseria and OR Tambo, and every route to the gate turn-offs is tarred. If you would rather not drive, ask your lodge for its transfer rate: we found no shuttle operator with a published price in September 2026. Lodges on the public road network, such as those at Bakubung and Kwa-Maritane, let you self-drive in the park once you arrive; the lodges in the private reserve on the western side are guided only.

From OR Tambo the road runs west across Gauteng before it reaches the R512 or the N4, and that urban stretch is where most of the extra time goes on a weekday. Our getting-there page has the full table of distances to each gate.

Pages that still sell flights to Pilanesberg

Several agent sites, some carrying a 2026 copyright line, still describe thrice-weekly flights from Cape Town, direct flights from Cape Town, or charters from Johannesburg to Pilanesberg International. None of these has operated since the terminal fire of August 2023. If a package includes a flight into Pilanesberg, ask the seller which airline and which flight number before you pay.

Something this page does not answer?

If a package or agent offers you a flight into Pilanesberg, send us the details and we will tell you what we know about it.

Ask us. We answer questions about the park itself, and we can usually tell you which camps work on one route and who to write to. If what you want is a trip someone else arranges, we will say so and hand you to an operator we know, and we earn a commission if that becomes a booking.

Nothing on this site sits behind the form. Every figure we have is already on the page.
