Money, honestly

What a visit to Pilanesberg actually costs

Two foreign visitors, a hire car, three nights on a campsite at Bakgatla: about $364, and three quarters of that is the conservation fee. Since 1 December 2025 the gate charges R748 per international adult per day, which makes Pilanesberg cheap to sleep at and expensive to enter. This page shows where each rand goes, then prices the same three nights at a mid-range lodge and at a top-end lodge.

If you only want the answer

For two international visitors with a car, three nights camping at Bakgatla come to about $364 (R5,958): $59 for the site, $274 in conservation fees and $31 for the car. The same three nights cost about $1,446 at Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge on half board, and about $2,750 at Shepherd's Tree Game Lodge with all meals and two drives a day. Rates are converted at USD 1 = ZAR 16.36 (24 September 2026).

Activity prices are Mankwe Gametrackers' own rates, valid 1 December 2025 to 30 November 2026, and exclude the conservation fee.

Estimates in US dollars at USD 1 = ZAR 16.36 (24 September 2026), rounded, at the dated rates sourced at the bottom of this page. Food, fuel and the drive from Johannesburg are not included. Campsites are charged per site for up to six people. Per-room lodge rates are halved to a per-person figure. The residency switch changes only the conservation fee; lodge rates are the published rates.

Budget one: self-drive camping at Bakgatla

About $364 for two people over three nights. A non-electrified campsite at Bakgatla Resort costs R322 a night midweek and R390 at weekends, per site for up to six people and two vehicles, on the grid read on 24 September 2026. The conservation fee is the big line: R748 per international adult per day under the tariff in force since 1 December 2025, and R168 a day for the car.

We count three fee-days for three nights. If you are billed for a fourth day on the way out, add R1,664 (about $102) for two people and the car. A couple with South African ID pays R168 each instead, which brings the same trip to about $151.

Line itemPer day (2 people)3 nights (2 people)
Bakgatla campsite, non-electrified, midweek (Sep 2026)$20$59
Conservation fee, 2 × R748 (tariff from 1 Dec 2025)$91$274
Vehicle, R168 a day (tariff from 1 Dec 2025)$10$31
Total±$364

Food, fuel and drinks are extra, and so is any guided drive: Mankwe Gametrackers charges R612 per person for a 3-hour drive from Bakgatla (2026). For a roof, a Bakgatla chalet for two is R3,138 a night with breakfast, which replaces the R966 camping line with R9,414 and brings the trip to about $881.

Budget two: Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge, half board

About $1,446 for two people over three nights. Legacy Hotels and Resorts sells Kwa Maritane from R6,222 per room per night on half board in 2026, and the lodge sits at its own gate on the south side of the park, so you can self-drive the public roads between meals. An agent rate of R2,502 per person sharing with one drive a day applies in low season.

Legacy's page does not say whether its rate includes the conservation fee, so the table adds it. Bakubung Bush Lodge, at Bakubung gate on the Ledig side, starts at R5,967 per room, but Legacy does not state the meal basis of that figure.

Line itemPer day (2 people)3 nights (2 people)
Kwa Maritane, R6,222 per room, half board (Legacy, 2026)$380$1,141
Conservation fee, 2 × R748 (tariff from 1 Dec 2025)$91$274
Vehicle, R168 a day (tariff from 1 Dec 2025)$10$31
Total±$1,446

Lunch, drinks and guided drives are extra unless your rate includes them. If the lodge bills the conservation fee within the room rate, take $274 off the total.

Budget three: Shepherd's Tree, all meals and two drives

About $2,750 for two people over three nights between May and September 2026. Shepherd's Tree Game Lodge, run by aha Hotels and Lodges in an exclusive-use zone in the south-west of the park, costs R6,750 per person sharing with all meals and two guided activities a day, on an agent rate for 1 May to 30 September 2026. The conservation fee is billed through the lodge.

There is no fly-in option in 2026. Pilanesberg International Airport has had no commercial flights since its terminal burned on 29 August 2023, so even top-end guests come by road from Lanseria or OR Tambo. Ivory Tree Game Lodge, also run by aha, is the lower-priced alternative at R5,110 per person sharing on full board (May to September 2026, agent rate).

Line itemPer day (2 people)3 nights (2 people)
Shepherd's Tree, 2 × R6,750, all meals and 2 activities (agent, May to Sep 2026)$825$2,476
Conservation fee, 2 × R748, billed by the lodge (tariff from 1 Dec 2025)$91$274
Total±$2,750

Shepherd's Tree has a private entrance off the R565; the agent rate does not say how your car is charged there. Transfers from Johannesburg are not included, and no shuttle price could be confirmed for 2026.

Why the gate fee is the biggest line

Until 30 November 2025 a foreign adult paid R110 a day. From 1 December 2025 it is R748: R680 base plus a 10% community conservation levy, an increase of 580%. A South African adult went from R80 to R168.

For a foreign couple in a car that is R1,664 a day, more than a night in most guesthouses in Mogwase, which Booking.com listed at R650 to R1,300 for two in October 2026. If you are on a tight budget, the cheapest saving is fewer park days rather than a cheaper bed.

Where the money surprises people

  • Many websites still show R110 for foreign visitors and R80 for South Africans. Those rates ended on 30 November 2025.
  • The gates are card only since 1 December 2025. Carry a chip-and-PIN card and a backup.
  • No Wild Card is accepted at Pilanesberg; it is a provincial park, not a SANParks one.
  • The non-SADC child rate is not published by the board. Agents quote R275 or R748; budget the higher figure.
  • Agent portals resell Mankwe's scheduled drives at R1,050 to R1,550 per adult; the operator's own price from Manyane or Bakgatla is R612 (2026).
  • A new tariff could start on 1 December 2026. The board has published no end date for the current one.
