Pilanesberg in June
June is deep winter in Pilanesberg: almost no rain, short days, crisp clear air and cold dawns.
If you only want the answer
About 5 mm of rain on a single day, highs of 19.2°C, the coolest of the year, and lows of 6.1°C. Game gathers at the water, gates run 06:30 to 18:00, and you need warm layers for any early drive or balloon flight.
June weather in Pilanesberg
The 1991 to 2020 average is 5 mm on about 1 rain day; the Rustenburg station records 9 mm. June has the lowest average high of the year at 19.2°C, and nights fall to about 6.1°C. Skies are usually clear, which means cold dawns and warm middays.
What June is like for game
The bush is thin and the grass short, so animals are easier to see and more of them come to Mankwe Dam and the hides to drink. Elephant and buffalo herds at water are a June highlight. Lion and leopard remain chance and luck sightings, but you see more of the park on each drive.
With gates closing at 18:00 and last entry about 17:00, the afternoon is short. A morning at the hides and a slow drive back towards your gate works better than trying to cross the whole park late in the day.
Cold on open vehicles
Mankwe Gametrackers' scheduled drives and the balloon flight (R6,592 per person plus the park fee, 2025 to 2026 rate) start in the cold. Bring a warm jacket, a hat and gloves. Pilanesberg is malaria-free, so winter is an easy month for families with school-age children.
