The gateway, used properly
Sun City and Rustenburg before Pilanesberg: fuel, gates, the drive (2026)
Sun City borders Pilanesberg on the south, which makes it the most convenient bed and the busiest launch point for the park. Rustenburg, about 50 km south, is the nearest city and the place your nearest hospital is, while Mogwase on the east side is the cheaper gateway most visitors never hear about.
If you only want the answer
From Sun City, Kwa-Maritane gate is about 7 km away and Bakubung gate a short drive west, so you can be in the park at opening. Gates take cards only, in rand, so you need no cash for entry; carry a chip-and-PIN card and a backup. Fill the tank before you leave Gauteng, sleep at Sun City if you want the resort or in Mogwase if you want to save, and plan your exit gate an hour before closing. Rustenburg, about 50 km away, has the nearest major hospitals.
Where is Sun City in relation to Pilanesberg?
Sun City sits against the southern edge of the park, and both southern gates are minutes away. Kwa-Maritane gate is about 7 km from the resort, according to a Pilanesberg agent site, and Bakubung gate lies a short drive west near Ledig on the R556. The resort and the park were planned together in the late 1970s, which is why the two fit so closely. Pilanesberg's own airport is next to the park near Sun City but has had no commercial flights since its terminal burned in August 2023.
Fuel, shops and supplies
The research behind this guide holds no checked list of fuel stations or supermarkets at Sun City, Ledig, Mogwase or Rustenburg, so we name none. The simple rule works: fill the tank before you leave Gauteng and top up on the way back. The park itself is small, about 570 km² with roughly 188 km of track, so a day of loops from any gate is a modest distance.
Inside the park, the Pilanesberg Centre near Mankwe Dam has had a restaurant and shop, but its 2026 status is unconfirmed. Manyane Resort lost its restaurant in a 2024 fire, and we have no 2026 confirmation that it has reopened. Take water and food for the day.
Cash, cards and what Sun City costs
You do not need cash for the park. Since 1 December 2025 the gates have been card only, in rand, under the tariff of R748 a day for a foreign adult, R168 for a South African adult and R168 for a car. No board document says which cards work or whether tap and phone payments are accepted, so bring a chip-and-PIN card and a second card. No Wild Card of any kind is accepted.
Sun City charges day visitors from R395 per adult and R290 per child aged 3 to 12, which covers resort entry and the Valley of Waves; tickets are sold through TicketPro only. If you sleep at one of the Sun International hotels, resort and Valley of Waves access is included in the room rate.
Sleeping at Sun City before the park
The four Sun International hotels publish rates per room per night, read on 24 September 2026. They suit you if the resort is part of the trip; for the park alone, the lodges at Bakubung and Kwa-Maritane gates put you at the park's edge for R5,967 to R6,222 a room under Legacy's 2026 rates.
| Hotel | From, per room per night | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|
| The Cabanas | R3,196 | $195 |
| Cascades | R3,726 | $228 |
| Sun City Hotel | R5,135 | $314 |
| The Palace of the Lost City | R5,217 | $319 |
Sun International rates read 24 September 2026; USD at 16.36 rand to the dollar. Sun City Hotel was previously sold as Soho.
Game drives and balloons from Sun City
Mankwe Gametrackers, the main guided operator in the park, picks up at the Sun City Welcome Centre. A scheduled 3-hour drive from Sun City or Bakubung gate costs R807 per person, against R612 from Manyane or Bakgatla, and the 2-hour drive is R612 from the Sun City side. These rates run from 1 December 2025 to 30 November 2026 and exclude the park fee. The hot-air balloon, R6,592 per person plus the park fee, also collects from Sun City or Bakubung gate. Mankwe sells quad biking near Sun City at R930 an hour.
Rustenburg: hospital and the park authority
Rustenburg, about 50 km south of the park, has the nearest major hospitals; Pretoria and Johannesburg are 2 to 2.5 hours away. For anything serious on a self-drive, that is the direction you head.
The North West Parks and Tourism Board runs Pilanesberg, but it has no working public office online: its website returned an error on 24 September 2026 and its other site is a countdown page. The numbers that work are the ones the agent portals print: park gate enquiries on +27 (0)14 555 1600, Golden Leopard Resorts for Manyane and Bakgatla camping on +27 (0)14 555 1000, and Mankwe Gametrackers on +27 (0)14 552 5033. None has been confirmed with the board.
The drive from Sun City to the gate
Time the gate, not the map. Gates open at 05:30 from November to February, 06:00 in March, April, September and October, and 06:30 from May to August, and close between 18:00 and 19:00. Entry generally stops an hour before closing, and there is no self-drive after dark. Weekend day-trippers from Gauteng queue from 08:00 to 09:00, so leaving Sun City at opening time beats both the queue and the midday lull.
| Leg | Distance | Time | Surface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun City resort to Kwa-Maritane gate | About 7 km | Not measured | Tar to the turn-off; a 2020 guide calls the south-east approach gravel |
| Sun City to Bakubung gate | Short drive west | Not measured | R556 past Sun City, towards Ledig |
| Bakubung gate to the north via Kubu and Kgabo Drive | Not measured | Not measured | Tar, potholed in places in 2026 |
| Ledig to Bakubung gate | About 2 to 4 km | Not measured | Map estimate |
The Sun City to Kwa-Maritane figure comes from an agent site and the Ledig figure is a map estimate; neither is a measured route.
The second gateway: Mogwase and Saulspoort on the east side
Mogwase, on the R510, is the town for Manyane gate, about 5 to 8 km away by map estimate, and Saulspoort near Moruleng serves Bakgatla gate, about 3 to 8 km away. Locally owned guesthouses here charged R650 to R1,300 a night for two on Booking.com for mid-October 2026, which is less than one foreign adult pays in gate fees over two days (2 × R748).
Choose Sun City if the resort is part of your plan or you want a short hop to the southern gates. Choose Mogwase if you are self-driving on a budget and happy to enter from the east. Bakgatla Resort and Manyane Resort, run by the state company Golden Leopard Resorts, sit at those gates and have campsites from R322 a site.
